Frequently asked questions
Who is our surf club for?
Do I need any experience to start the classes?
No, you don’t need to have any prior surfing experience. At our school, we offer lessons for complete beginners, and we teach and guide you from the very beginning so you can build confidence and get the hang of surfing right away.
At what age can a student enroll?
At Ultramarinos Surf School, we accept students as young as 6 years old, so if you have a child at home who is that age or older, you’re welcome to bring them to our school. We organize our students first by age and then by skill level, so we can tailor our classes and training sessions to the needs of each group.
What are our class schedules like?
At our school, we schedule our classes based on the day’s weather conditions, always letting you know in advance so you can plan accordingly. Generally, during the week we hold our surf lessons in the afternoon, and on weekends we also offer morning sessions. In addition, during the summer we also have after-work and sunset sessions.
Do I need to bring my own materials to class?
Although it’s recommended, you don’t need to bring your own board or wetsuit. All our rates include the necessary equipment for the session. All you need to bring is a swimsuit, a towel, and flip-flops for walking down to the beach.
Are the classes always held at the same beach?
At Ultramarinos Surf School, we invite anyone who loves surfing and wants to train regularly to join our club. We welcome not only adults but also children and teenagers. The only requirement is this: an interest in the sport and a desire to learn.
Are the classes always held at the same beach?
Although the beaches at Orzán and Matadero (A Coruña) are the closest to our school, we also often go to other beaches along the A Coruña coast (such as Caión, Razo, or Miño). We choose the beach based on our students’ skill level and the weather conditions on that day, and we let the groups know in advance.
What is our club like for children (ages 6–10) and teens (ages 11–16)?
If you’re looking for after-school activities for your children, our surf club is here to help. For our youngest students, our classes are designed to help them get comfortable with the ocean in a fun and safe way. For older students, we step up the challenge—tailoring the difficulty to each age group—and introduce them to more advanced concepts, including analysis and correction of their surfing technique.
What surfing levels do our clubs offer?
Just like our individual lessons, our surf club offers beginner and advanced sessions, with no price difference based on skill level. Similarly, within the club, we organize groups by skill level and age, tailoring lessons to each student’s needs.
Why is it a good idea to join the surf club?
Our surf club exists to help you continue your surf training beyond one-off lessons. In other words, we want you to keep learning and improving consistently, rather than through sporadic sessions, as these don’t yield the same results. This way, our instructors can track your progress much more closely and tailor your training sessions accordingly, providing a much more personalized experience.
How do I know what my skill level is as a surfer?
In our beginner classes, we teach students with little experience or those who are completely new to the sport. To join our advanced classes, you must be able to catch waves completely on your own. If you have some surfing experience but aren’t sure where you fit in, you can always book a private lesson with us so we can assess your skills and offer guidance.
If I start the beginner classes, can I switch to the advanced classes later?
Of course. As a surf school, we want your technique and knowledge as a surfer to improve over time. Our instructors keep a close eye on your progress, so when they see that you’re ready, they’ll recommend that you move on to the next level.
What if I can't make it to a class?
If you want to reschedule or cancel a class, you must let us know in advance, by 8:00 p.m. on the day before the session. Otherwise, the class will be considered attended. Class passes are valid for 4 months to allow for any unforeseen circumstances.
What happens if sea conditions prevent the class from taking place?
If weather conditions prevent us from holding the session safely, it will be canceled, but it will not count as a used class. In other words, our school will reschedule it for a more favorable date so that you can make it up without any issues.
Can I rent equipment without teaching the class?
Yes, you don’t have to participate in the sessions to rent equipment from our school. You can rent by the hour or by the day, picking up and returning the equipment at our location at 11 Forcarei Street (A Coruña).
